I still contend it was all a domino effect from Anita. GamerGate was still ultimately just an inevitable reaction to what people like her were pushing.
It's very possible. And Anita herself was a reaction to other things. She didn't appear one day from thin air, some college turned her into that.
But I think Anita was the point where the culture war could no longer be averted. You can make people tolerate many indignities as long as they're left their bread and circuses. She was so blatantly taking away our circuses of course people started fighting back.
And then the games press, the people who SHOULD speak for gamers, took her side. And they took Bioware's side during the Mass Effect ending clusterfuck, they took Ninja Theory's side with the DMC "entitled gamers" thing. They were supposed to be OUR voice, and they always sided AGAINST gamers.
So you had two big forces, social justice ideology pushing into gaming and destroying it, and the games press hating its audience. Eventually, inevitably, those two trains were going to collide and cause the culture war. If it hadn't been GG it would have been something else.
I never used to believe that, but after TLOU and the Max Temkin thing have made it fairly obvious she's running a protection racket...yeah there's a good chance of this.

Maybe you're right, but I'd contend even Anita and the reaction to her was just another domino pushed over by the Penny Arcade Dickwolves fiasco.
