Don't play Apex (I have but it didn't really hook me) but I do play overwatch.
Just from my experience my suspicions are that cheating is much more common than people think it is including myself. Given how insanely competitive it is to climb and how easy it is to brush off when you see it.
I gave up on competitive 3 or so years ago and just play random exclusively because of how frustrating it was. My deaths fell quite a bit and most importantly it was less frustrating because the deaths felt more deserved. I FEEL less people would be cheating in random because the risk vs reward in doing so isn't as favorable as ranked.
Essentially yeah I'm pretty sure there's a fair bit of cheating in any game where people REALLY want to win in and yeah you're spot on, they downplay it as long as nobody complains too much.
