How do you prevent these sites from becoming like Gab or /pol/? I think that's the downfall of reddit alternatives. You end up being surrounded by crazy racists. Is there a way to still make it friendly for all, or is it a lost cause?

I agree.

But if I'm being painfully honest with those we stand against I doubt our room is ever going to be "free to say whatever someone wants".
