Minetest! It's written in C, so it never had the bottlenecks that Minecraft did. I played with a Nether mod that worked by spawning a different biome at -64000 or something. It's pretty cool. I found it easier to mod. The only downside, for me, was the smaller community.

I found Battle for Wesnoth very well made, and I really enjoyed playing it for a while, but the actual campaign did become boring for me.
