What is it about easter eggs (and such) in software that makes them such a canary for this sort of thing?
Easter eggs demonstrate that the people working at the company might have some degree of personality rather than being assimilated into a corporate hive mind where all individual interests are subservient to the whims of the collective, by which I mean senior managers.
Authoritarians (of all stripes) hate fun?
Every time
"Our niche product offering is successful, let's make it pure shit so we can market it globally!"
I've noticed quite often it's because the niche offering has been living off of venture capital and doesn't have a clear way to monetize the userbase. The trend towards sanitizing and the niche product becoming crap happens when the investors start looking to cash out.
True, but VC are constantly idiots for dumping millions into muh Apps
"Ok so it's like an app that moos at you if you are late for an appointment on your calendar"
"So... Like a cow? Would that have an audience?"
"...yes we had a college dropout do market analysis it's wide open we'd have a monopoly!"
"ok here's 200 million dollars but make sure you monetize it to make our investment back"
So, the only ones that they still associate with are furries and pedos?
Furries, pedos, porn, and rp (usually erotic rp)
So it's just a worse Skype now?
Its dark themed slack lol
Slack has a dark theme now (after years of people begging for it), btw.
Anyone can recommend a good alternative?
Been using microsoft Teams and I like it a hell of a lot better. Discord’s layout is fucking trash.
We used Teams for a bit at my company, and no one liked it. The company switched back to Slack after only a month or two using Teams.
Doesn't Teams auto-censor?
Riot.im is nice, but doesnt have the gaming and voice features.
Is that associated with Riot Games, because if so I'd rather not use something associated with CCP Tencent.
irc
I'm not even joking.
I don't know of any "consolidated" alternative.
For the text portion, IRC ain't bad.
Discord has investment from Tencent.
Tencent is owned by the Chinese Communist Party
Once of the conditions of Tencent investment is to give them full, realtime access to all user data.
Using Discord means you are giving the CCP backdoor access to your PC.
From this they can use your PC to do various nefarious things, many of which are illegal and could probably get you in trouble from your local police.
TicTok has the same investment structure, and it's just been revealed that the app is using a number of things to "hack" the devices it's installed on, Discord is no different in potential.
It most likely is not enabled today, but the potential is still there.
And with any CCP investment comes the inevitable censorship and narrative control, just look at reddit.
Who coincidentally have Tencent investment too
And it doesn't matter how much discord management say it will never happen, all it takes is a few $$$ into the back pocket of an unhappy engineer for the codebase to be made more "compliant"
And yes, what I'm saying sounds like some Alex Jones conspiracy bullshit.
If you believe its a conspiracy I can sell you the rope Epstein hung himself with
Standard corporate virtue signaling.
Guess I’ll have to move my server elsewhere
WELP
buh bye Discord
chunks app into etherwebs
I actually hated all of that shit, so I'm glad to see it go.
...However, I would be lying if I said I didn't think this is probably a canary in the coalmine signalling the beginning of the end for the platform.
I've been online since the late 90's and in that time I've seen enough online services rise and fall to know that as soon as you see the money men start calling the shots and begin aping other popular services, the platform is on the way out and we'll all be moving somewhere else in the next few years.
