We've all had our fair share of disappointments these last few years. A popular game series has an anticipated sequel, and it's impact is damaged by unwarranted nannying from the game itself, or its vocal staff on Twitter. Which game series did you like, that had a poor sequel?
One of mine is: The World Ends with You: Neo. Apparently it's dub is aggressively political? For my own health, I'm not reading that.
It happened slowly with the assassins creed series. It started with killer Swordplay and deadly assassinations in awesome historical settings with a pretty compelling sci-fi modern day hook, and a shit ton of lore and mythology neatly encompassing all the best conspiracy theories ever discussed.
Then one day, for no reason at all, female pirates. Okay no big deal 🤷🏼♂️
Then one day a set of fraternal twins in Victorian England. She a shrewd, smart and deadly killer assassin; he a bumbling simpleton who never thinks things through (and is hinted at as being bisexual). Oh yes and a cross dressing woman pretending to be a man whom no one bats an eyelid at...in VICTORIAN ENGLAND.
Then Egyptians darker than the cast of captain Phillips and an inexplicable retcon of the entire series mythology so that it wasn’t Greyworm-lookalike who founded the brotherhood, but his fuckin wife. His wife founded the BROTHERHOOD 🤦🏼
Then it was a female Spartan mercenary (which were never a thing) screwing her way around Ancient Greece, and if you dared play as the male counterpart you’d be smugly reminded by reddit that the female is Muh cannon 🏳️🌈 ✊🏿
Then we all got pumped from 6 months of promo clips and trailers showing a bad ass Viking dude getting his face painted in blood and throat-blading Andre the giant’s big brother while an epic thunderstorm breaks out in the distance. The actual game arrives and nope, the main character is actually a chain smoking German chick who looks like Dolph Lungren mid-transition. She’s supposed to be the reincarnation of Odin, but somehow she’s the only Norse god who changed sex when the space magic machines mixed their DNA with Homo sapiens. Christians are bad, the game map is bloated to all hell, christians are bad, the modern day element is atrocious and christians are bad. And did I mention christians are bad?
The series is now about as close to the original assassins creed as it is to Mario kart
Ugh I recently started playing Valhalla. That sucks. Yea the previous one in Greece the creator was upset because more people played as the male. Didnt dawn on him that the game generally appeals to more men but that’s why they force females in everything
But they’re still wise enough to always put the MALE character on all the marketing and cover art to entice you into making the purchase, before they bait and switch you into playing as a lesbian shield maiden. They know if they put “Lesbian Shield Maiden’s Creed” on the box cover, no one would buy it.
I still had a blast playing Odyssey as Alexios in spite of their bullshit, and a lot of Valhalla too despite its issues, it’s just with every game it gets harder and harder to ignore it. And you shouldn’t have to be sitting there “putting up with” stuff, right? It should be an absolute blast to play from start to finish like the ezio games were, we play these games to escape the real world’s shittyness, not to be reminded of it at every turn. I wish they would go back to giving us what we want instead of what they want us to want.
Absolutely perfect summary. I'll add they also threw out the PvP multiplayer
Apex Legends. Awesome game that was already dying due to greed and macrotransactions. Suddenly all of the characters start becoming gay, or non binary. Then they release the newest character, Seer. A gay black non binary dude that is designed to be OP. They probably did it on purpose to have the best character be black and gay.
The guy in charge of character balance and design ended up getting fired, and the game is a mess now
fallout
Did Fallout get political, or just incompetent? I've heard the complaints about bland, no-choice writing in FO4m and of course I know about the false advertising, technical, and pr dumpster fire that is Fallout 76. But I've not heard anything about politics in particular—beyond the usual speculation that woke hiring helps make these disasters happen, of course.
Fallout's entire universe is a political commentary.
Yeah, but last I knew, it wasn’t a heavy-handed leftist one. One of the main causes of the initial nuclear war was communist China launching an attack on the United States, wasn’t it?
For a guy with my username, I know relatively little about Fallout lore, but my impression hadn’t been that it was overtly SJW in its political commentary. Although, I imagine the synths and sentient ghouls offer opportunities if you were to push that way. Is that what they did? “Oh, these poor misjudged minorities, pay no attention to how most of them are monsters”?
I would recommend reading more about the lore then if you're not familiar with it.
Overall, Fallout's message was one of anti-war and anti-capitalism, and it had been that way from the beginning. There had been a constant theme of juxtaposition between the 1950's pro-war propaganda and "consume product" advertising against the ravaging effects of war.
Yes, Liberty Prime had the message of "death is a preferable alternative to communism," although it was in essence a satire of the slogans of the cold-war era. Mind you, the game isn't an argument in favor of communism or leftist ideologies, but an illustration of a post-war society and the cruelty of leaders that are far removed from the greater civilization (The Master, John Eden, Dr. House, The Institute)
They're excellent games, some better than others, but the overall themes stay relatively consistent throughout.
Sure, I get that, but the question was what games had had their writing ruined by politics. To my knowledge, Fallout has yet to take the full plunge into heavy-handed modern leftism.
I would imagine anti-capitalism/anti-war to be pretty leftist. The games have also consistently embraced themes of diversity, showing that there are ghouls and synths that do offer support and good opportunity for you, the main character. There were synths who were literally programmed drones for the antagonist, but there were also synths who were escaping from that life and wanting to work for the good of the whole of humanity. There were ghouls who were mindless animals, and others, "sentient ghouls" which were also productive members of society only ostracized for their looks when under their skin (or lack thereof) they were kind people.
Have you played them?
Okay also horses
The latest Fallout is always an abomination and the one before is always the best in the series, according to fans.
I’m old enough to remember when Fallout “shouldn’t be an FPS”
Although 76 deserves the hatred. It’s fucking awful.
Politically, it’s always been pretty even handed.
If you dive into the extended lore around 1 and 2, many of the indian nations somehow survived nuclear armageddon without a vault or any preparation because... "theyre in touch with nature". Not only that but they become political and military powerhouses with functional societies run by communes. Its basically those antifa autonomous zones but actually functional. Mexico and south america are also mostly intact and functioning as the last bastions of human society, with much of mexico reverting to its tribal roots and becoming like the aztecs (but somehow still being functional).
All of this is of course without mentioning the fact that they portray the last of the US government, the Enclave, as purely bad guys because they want to wipe the nation clean of raiders and horribly irradiated monsters.
"But they dont respect the sovereignty of JunkProstituteDrugMurder town! And theyre just normal folks!"
Honestly.
The Brotherhood of Steel are the only vaguely american group that isnt portrayed as pure evil. Theyre merely portrayed as deeply incompetent and religious.
There is actually religion in fallout as well, its just that every single religious person is part of a cult that wants to brainwash everyone and is universally hated for it.
what a fucking idiot you are
Fallout was a political game from the very first version. It was always meant to be a commentary on capitalism, nationalism, and war
oh REALLY????
Yes. Did you play the early ones?
do you know what sarcasm is?
I do. But damn you’re salty all over this thread.
Ya gotta take a chill pill my dude. Good luck with the rest of your day!
fucking idiot
Fallout 3 = Interesting locations and story, monsters, aliens, mystery. (talking tree, VR suburb prison, AI leaders, Liberty Prime!, Great radio, haunted mines....... etc....)
Fallout 4 = Us Vs Them, a few ghouls. Buildings. Deathclaw. Buildings. More buildings. YAWWWWWWWN.
